Creating a web part for WSS 3.0 is pretty easy. In fact it's really easy.
However, for some reason, my web parts never work first time; so I've decided to set out a list of the things I forget which scupper my best laid plans
1. The class needs to be public, doh!
2. Using controls? Did you remember to EnsureChildControls?
3. You need to sign the assembly and register it as safe within the web.config
4. Don't forget, in a farm the assemblies need to be on all of the machines
Some people may be thinking, "Come on, that's day one week one!", sometimes it's the simple things that you forget!

Books, books and books
I have collected several books recently. Although working in IT I should embrace online books and e-books I still like the feel of paper and ink and referencing a proper book.
That said, none of the books I have bought have the wealth of information available on the Internet. Some of them are, however, very good;
Microsoft SharePoint: Building Office 2007 Solutions in C# 2005, Scot Hillier
Inside Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, Ted Pattison and Daniel Larson
Other than that, Google is your friend and hopefully, this site will soon be...

So, whats the point?
I've been doing some pretty extensive WSS 3.0 customisation and development over the past couple of months.
It's been quite a steep learning curve for certain aspects and I've found some of the SharePoint blogs across the internet absolutely invaluable. I decided a central repository of the information I've needed and found would be useful for me, and potentially quite useful for others.
I will of course ensure I reference and acknowledge any original authors work where practicable.
With luck, this will help at least one person. Watch this space....
